Treumann Joseph
Lykken, 90, of Grand Forks, ND died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Altru
Hospital, from complications of a broken hip.
Treumann Lykken was born on February 10, 1920, to Joseph and Ragna
(Thompson) in Adams, ND. He grew up and attended school in rural Adams,
ND. On April 6, 1946 he married Margaret Lothspeich in Langdon, ND, they
were married for 56 years. He worked for the Gambles Store in Grafton,
Carrington, Bismarck, ND and Webster, SD. They settled in Grand Forks,
ND in 1954 where he was employed with Sears and Roebuck for 28 years. He
retired in 1982.
On his 21st birthday he joined the National Guard, 164th Infantry,
Company C, in Grafton, ND. He served in several locations including
Guadalcanal and was discharged in 1945. Throughout his life he
maintained an active membership in the 164th Infantry. Treumann was a
member of the American Legion for 66 years. He served as the Post
Commander, Second District Commander and Eastern Region Vice Commander.
He was elected the Department of North Dakota Commander serving from
June 1975 to June 1976. He then served two three - year terms on the
National Americanism Committee.
When Treumann retired he and Margaret started spending their winters in
Mesa Village where they were active members of the community and
established many lifelong friends.
Treumann has been a member of Sharon Lutheran Church since 1954. He was
a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. For
the last seven years he enjoyed the company of his close friend Eloise
McCabe. He was very devoted to his family and lived his life fully. He
was the “rock” of the family and a very loving and calm person. Treumann
was well thought of and was looked up to by so many people. His laughter
brightened everybody’s day.

Rosella (Sally) Schneider went to live with our Lord and Savior on July
22, 2010, with family by her side at their home after a courageous
battle with Breast Cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial for Rosella (Sally) Schneider will be Monday,
July 26, 2010, at 12 noon at the Church of St Anne, Bismarck, ND, with
Father Dennis Schaefer officiating, burial at the North Dakota Veteran’s
Cemetery, Mandan, ND, at 3pm.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until 7:00 pm Sunday at Parkway
Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a vigil/rosary will
begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue starting at 10:30 am Monday
until the time of the service.
Sally (Roll) Schneider was born January 10, 1941, to Mike & Rosa
(Reichert) Roll, at the Roll farm north of Burt, ND. Sally was the
youngest daughter of 14 kids and went to school and graduated from Mott
Lincoln High School in 1960. On November 23, 1960, Sally married Marlin
Schneider, her lifetime love in Mott.
Sally worked at the Pheasant Café as a waitress and cook, and later was
a CNA at Good Samaritan Society, Mott. In November, 1994, Sally and
Marlin moved to Bismarck and Sally worked for the Kensington which later
became the Sunrise Living Center as a CNA and Med Tech.
She is a member of Catholic Daughters of America, St. Veronica’s Court
in Mott; she was also involved with the altar society.
Sally was so giving and caring she took care of many individuals
including her parents and her brother Jerome and her father-in
law. Sally and Marlin were blessed with three beautiful daughters.
Sally’s hobbies were woodworking, staining and finishing antiques; oil
painting was a special talent. She really enjoyed collecting dishes,
Seraphim Angels and Precious Moments Christmas ornaments. She was a very
talented woman; she could and did make many things from almost
nothing. Sally’s favorite holiday was Christmas and anyone that came to
their home during the Christmas season could see why. She loved to cook
and bake and to share her treasures with others.
Grateful for having shared in Sally’s life are her loving husband,
Marlin; three daughters and four grand children, Carla Schneider,
Hettinger; Kim (Randy Gene) Friez, Brandon and Marah, Mott; Becky
(Justin) Eikamp, Madee and Drew, Bismarck; six sisters, Gladys Humeston,
Eldorado Springs, MO, Delores Lee, Hettinger, ND, Viola Dauenhauer,
Billings, MT, Barbara(Cornelius) Kautzman, Ballentine, MT, Anna Kuntz,
Billings, MT, Eva(Innozent) Zentner, Mott; one brother, William (Winnifred)
Roll, Eldorado Springs, MO, sisters-in-law, Betty Roll and Norita Roll,
Mott, ND; brothers-in- law, Earl(Lorraine) Schneider, Minot, ND,

will be held Thursday, July 1, 2010 at 2:00 pm in the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Cooperstown, ND. Interment will be in Silent Hill Cemetery,
Aneta, ND. Carrol Howard Torgerson, 90, passed away peacefully at home
in Billings, Mont., on Saturday, June 26, 2010. He is remembered fondly
for his positive, loving and friendly manner, his outgoing personality
and his innate ability to make everyone he came in contact with feel
that he truly cared about them. He was a deeply spiritual man who read
the Bible an hour every day. By his bedside, he kept a handwritten copy
of Ephesians 4:32: “And be ye kind one to another, tender hearted,
forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
He truly lived by these words.
Carrol was born
September 26, 1919, the son of Herman and Mary Torgerson, on a homestead
farm near Bainville, Montana. In 1920, the family moved to a farm near
Aneta, N.D., where Carrol, his brothers Mayo and Miles, and his sister
Marjorie attended school. Following the death of his father, he managed
the farm for his family. After graduating from Aneta High School, Carrol
attended North Dakota State University from 1937-38. His additional
education includes Reisch Auctioneering School, Mason City, Iowa in 1959
and property appraisal classes at NDSU in 1970.
From 1939-42,
Carrol was employed in several positions at the Griggs County
Agricultural and Stabilization Service, first as a surveyor’s helper,
then surveyor, office clerk, crop adjuster, field man, and finally as
administrative assistant and office manager.
During World War
II, he enlisted in the United States Naval Construction Seabees serving
from 1942-45. While in the service, he saw active duty in the
Bougainville and the Phillippine Island Invasions. He attained the rank
of Yeoman First Class before being honorably discharged in October 1945.
After his tour of
military duty, he returned to Griggs County and married Maxine Rhodes on
February 9, 1946.
Carrol managed the
Shepard Elevator and Grain Company from 1946-52. In this capacity, he
bought and sold grain and kept records of the company. A very capable
businessman, he became owner-partner of Main Motors, buying and selling
cars, trucks, farm implements and parts, all while supervising 15
employees. Later, he and Maxine owned and operated a fabric store and
Torgersons’ Variety and Paint Store and Coffee Shop from 1960-1965. He
was also an auctioneer, appraiser and realtor of property from
1960-2003.
Along with his
business ventures, Carrol was an extremely active member in numerous
church, civic, political and Veteran’s organizations.
Church activities
included Sunday School and Bible School Teacher, Deacon, and president
of Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown.
Community
organizations with which Carrol was involved include secretary and
president of the Cooperstown Commercial Club (1957 Diamond Jubilee and
1982 Cooperstown Centennial); president of the Cooperstown Toastmasters
Club; master of the Cooperstown Masonic Lodge; Charter Member of the
Griggs County Crop Improvement Association; Boy Scout counselor; city
assessor; city auditor; secretary and president of the Cooperstown
Municipal Association; member of the North Dakota Economic Development
Commission, and North Dakota State Gaming Commissioner.
Veteran’s
organizations with which Carrol was affiliated include local post
commander and life member of the Cooperstown American Legion; district,
regional and state commander of the North Dakota American Legion, as
well as life member and executive committeeman; and life member of the
North Dakota Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Carrol was an
enthusiastic Republican and served in the North Dakota Senate for two
terms in the 1960s. There he was Assistant Majority Leader for four
sessions, State Senate Vice Chairman of the Tax Committee and served on
the Judiciary Committee. He was also a Charter Member of the National
Society of State Legislators (1965). He was the Representative for North
Dakota State Senate at President Richard Nixon’s inauguration and as the
Eastern North Dakota Chairman for Ronald Reagan’s Presidential campaign.
In 2003, Carrol
left Griggs County and moved to Arizona, where he married Ruth Elaine
Rhodes Shervheim. Carrol and Ruthie enjoyed seven happy years together.
Carrol is survived
by his wife, Ruth; brother Mayo; sister Marjorie; daughter-in-law Peggy
(Suess) Torgerson; grandson Brent Torgerson and wife Jessie;
brother-in-law Dick Deilke and wife Sandie; brother-in-law Carl Dielke
and wife Vi; numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Maxine Rhodes
Torgerson (1999); infant son Michael Lonny Torgerson (1948); and son
Michael Carl Torgerson (2009); brother Miles.

Helen Prochnow, 87, Wahpeton, N.D., died on
Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at the St. Francis Healthcare Campus-Hospital,
Breckenridge, Minn.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 10, at First
English Lutheran Church, Fairmount, N.D., with the Rev. Anthony Ahrendt
officiating.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, April 9 with a 7 p.m. prayer
service at Willow Creek Chapel (920 3rd Ave. N.) Wahpeton, and one hour
before the service at the church on Saturday.
Burial will be at Fairmount Cemetery, Fairmount.
Arrangements are with the Vertin-Munson Wahpeton Funeral Home, Wahpeton.
Helen was born May 8, 1922, the daughter of Charles and Louise (Fredickson)
Templeton. She attended school at Fairmount, where she graduated from
high school in 1940. She worked for Cudahy Packing Co. from 1940 to
1942. She was united in marriage to Willis H. Prochnow on Sept. 8, 1942.
The couple farmed in Fairmount Township, rural Fairmount. Helen worked
at Wahpeton Rehab from 1960 to 1969. Willis died on June 19, 1965, then
she moved to Wahpeton and in 1969 she moved to Fargo, N.D., where she
worked for the VA Medical Center. In August of 1998 she moved to the
Leach Home, Wahpeton. She entered St. Catherine’s Living Center,
Wahpeton, in 2002.
Helen was a member of First English Lutheran Church and LWML. She was a
lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary (Fairmount), and past state
president of American Legion Auxiliary (1986). She enjoyed quilting and
crocheting.
Helen is survived by: her two sons, Charles E. (Peggy) Prochnow,
Fairmount, and Jeffrey L. (Marilyn) Prochnow, Casselton, N.D.; four
grandchildren, Tammy (Cory) Marquardt, West Fargo, N.D., Wendy (Neil)
Ward, Cresbard, S.D., Lee Prochnow, Bismarck, N.D., Jason Prochnow, West
Fargo; and three great-grandchildren, Kendra Bohlen, Cresbard, McKenzie
Prochnow, Harvey, N.D., and Dawson Ward, Cresbard.

The heavenly choir of angels has welcomed its new director. Gurmen
Schimke, age 78 of Hebron, ND & Centerville, IA, passed away Friday,
January 8, 2010 at the Mercy Hospital Hospice Unit in Centerville, IA. A
memorial service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, January 16 at First
Lutheran Church, 800 N. 7th St., in Bismarck, ND.
Gurmen Soloman Schimke was born June 27, 1931 in Bowdon, ND to Soloman
and Leah (Hartman) Schimke. He grew up and was educated in Bowdon , ND.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served in
Germany from 1951-1953. Ila Faye (Fornshell) married Gurmen, her high
school sweetheart, in 1956.
Gurmen received his teaching degree from Valley City State College.
Through his more than fifty years of teaching music and geography he
touched hundreds of lives. He taught in Kathryn, Wolford, Hebron,
Lemmon, SD and Shiloh Christian School in Bismarck, ND, retiring in
2007. He attended more junior high and high school basketball and
football games and directed more concerts than anyone can count. Gurmen
worked many summers for the National Park Service and the Theodore
Roosevelt Medora Foundation in Medora, ND. Gurmen had a deep faith and
belief in God. He was very active in the church and directed several
cantatas and a church choir. He also maintained a strong, lifelong pride
in service and country. He was active as a Boy Scout Leader, was active
in the American Legion, and the Lions. He enjoyed gardening, nature,
working in his shop (insisting that no one rearrange his tools),
photography, genealogy, fishing, and of course, music.
Gurmen had the great fortune to find love and marry a second time.
Gurmen and Caroline DeMars married in 2006. Enjoying the best of both
worlds, they lived their summers in Hebron, ND and their winters in
Centerville, IA. Gurmen was husband to Ila Faye and Caroline, father to
Erika Lorenz-Perry, grandfather to Grayson and Grant Lorenz, step-father
to Marie Ashbaugh , Mary (Wayne) Devore, and Joseph (Christine) DeMars ,
step-grandfather to Noelle, Brett, Christian, Dylan, Austin, and Lucas,
brother to Jacqueline Degroot and uncle to Don (Raquel) Degroot. He is
survived by many friends and former students. He was preceded in death
by his parents (Soloman and Leah), and wife (Ila Faye). |

Sebastian T. "Seb" Roll, age 73 of Mott, ND
passed away at Medcenter One in Bismarck, ND on January 1, 2010 with his
family at his side.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am,
MT, Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Mott
with Fr. Charles Zins, and Deacon Ervin Schneider, officiating. Burial
will be in Sunnyslope Cemetery with full military honors afforded by the
Taylor-Skartvedt American Legion Post #71 of Mott.
Visitations will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. on
Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010 and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday,
all at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church. A Rosary/Wake service will be
Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Sebastian T. Roll was born on March 21, 1936 to
Mike and Rosa (Reichert) Roll at the farm north of Burt, ND. Seb went to
country school for 6 years and then to St. Vincent Grade School and Mott
Lincoln High School, graduating in 1956.
Seb joined the National Guard in April 1955 and
served for 8 years while going to Fort Riley, Kansas for active duty.
On November 5, 1956 he married Norita Lutz, the
love of his life. In 1958, they moved to the farm and had 4 children.
Michael, Brent, Glenn and Shelly.
Some of his accomplishments were, Township
Assessor, Hettinger County Commissioner, and Elgin Hospital Board. He
helped build and remodel many houses, did electrician work, plumbing,
and anything else someone needed help with. He was very instrumental in
the remodel of the St. Vincent Catholic Church. He was a member of the
Knights of Columbus, was a Fourth Degree Knight.
One of Seb’s proudest accomplishments, other
than his family, was in the American Legion. He served The American
Legion as a Post Commander, District Commander, State Vice Commander,
State Department Commander, National Vice Commander as well as having
served two terms (the limit) on the Department Executive Committee. He
also represented The American Legion on the North Dakota Veterans
Coordinating Council for many years, as well as numerous National
Committee’s. He also served as a Hettinger County Commissioner. He was
an honorary lifetime and PUFL member of the Taylor-Skartvedt American
Legion Post #71 of Mott and a paid lifetime member AMVETS, and Voiture
Locale 696 of La Societe of 40 et 8.
Grateful for having shared in Seb's life are his
wife, Norita, of Mott; sons, Brent (Mary) Roll, Mott; Glenn (Susan)
Roll, Glyndon, MN; daughter, Shelly (Scott) McCormack, Puyallup, WA;
daughter-in-law, Donna Roll, Nashville, TN; 10 grandchildren, Dawnette &

Richard Ardell Bjerke was born October 13, 1934
to Melvin and Magda (Otteson) Bjerke. He attended High School at
Portland, ND, and served in the U.S. Army for 2 years. On April 19, 1956
he married Eleanor Katherine Johnson. The couple farmed northwest of
Hunter, ND and in 1966 they moved and farmed near Ayr, ND. In 1999,
Richard retired and the couple moved to Page. He continued to be active
in farming, for the rest of his life.
Richard was an active member of Trinity Lutheran
Church in Ayr, and served on the church council. He was a 4-H leader for
15 years, served on the Page City Council and had been the Adjutant for
the American Legion at Erie, ND for many years. Richard served as a
District Commander of The American Legion in the 1993-1994 .
Richard enjoyed his family, working on old
machinery, and was always there to give a helping hand. He was well
known for being patient and kind.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor of Page; 5
children, Larry (Sherry) Bjerke of Ayr, ND, Kathyrn (Mike) Mahoney of
Longmont, CO, Pamela Gohdes of Fargo, ND, Ronald Bjerke of Peoria, IL,
and Bradley (Cheryl) Bjerke of Peoria, IL; 12 grandchildren; 4
greatgrandchildren; 4 sisters, Marcella Moen of Mayville, ND, Arlene
Hanson of Minot, ND, Corrine (Floyd) Knudson of Mayville, and Marion
Brasel of Blanchard, ND; and 2 brothers Selmer Bjerke of Halstad, MN,
and Robert (Sharon) Bjerke of Clifford, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
brother, Herman and daughter-in-law Julia Bjerke.
Visitation: 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00
PM, Friday, December 4, 2009 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Page, ND,
and one hour prior to the funeral service, on Saturday, at the church.

Joseph Thomas Steier, 83, of Reeder, ND died on October 25, 2009, at St.
Benedict's Health Care Center Dickinson, ND.
Joes' Christian Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, at
Holy Trinity Catholic Church Hettinger, ND. Fr. Joseph Chipson will
officiate. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 27, from 3:00pm with
rosary beginning at 6:00pm at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hettinger,
ND. Burial with full Military Honors will be held at the North Dakota
Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND on Thursday October 29, at 1:00 p.m. CST
with Fr. Chad Gion, Officiating.
Joseph Thomas “Joe” Steier was born September 20, 1927 at Buffalo
Springs, ND to Alex and Mary (Frank) Steier. He attended Enterprize
School, Sheffield Elementary and graduated from Reeder High School in
1946.
Joe enlisted in the Air Force in 1948 where he met Edith Calkins and
they married on February 2, 1951. After completing his military service
in 1952 they moved back to Reeder and farmed until his retirement in
2003.
Joe served in numerous local and state organizations. He served on SW
Water Board, Farmers Union, Farm Bureau, American Legion, Lion's and 40
et 8.
He
is survived by his wife Edith of 58 years and their 10 children;
Margaret (Jim) Rask, Riverdale, ND, Anton Steier, Billings MT, George
Steier, Boise ID, Antoinette (Don) Fuller, River Falls WI, Loretta
Rustan & Keith Schank, Dickinson ND, David (Julie) Sacramento CA,
Victor, Evanston WY, Sandy (Ken) Skuza, Riverdale ND, Theresa (Gary)
Stagl, Mandan ND, Robert (Roberta) Steier, Reeder ND. He was blessed
with 18 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Joe is also survived by
one sister Lidwina (Ray) Dvorak, Belle Fourche SD, one brother Herman (Danelda)
Steier, Deadwood SD and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by his parents Alex and Mary Steier.

Marlo R. Tveter, 61, Oakes, N.D., formerly of Mooreton, N.D., died
Monday, July 20, 2009 at Innovis Health in Fargo, N.D. Vertin-Munson
Funeral Home, Wahpeton, is in charge of arrangements.
The funeral service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m., at Grace Lutheran
Church, Oakes, with the Rev. Gordie Lee officiating, and a visitation
Thursday at Willow Creek Chapel (920 3rd Ave. N.) Wahpeton, from 5-8
p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service and one hour before the service at
the church on Friday. Burial will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery,
Mooreton.
Marlo was born July 15, 1948 at Breckenridge, Minn., the son of Harry M.
and Margaret (Krause) Tveter. He grew up in Mooreton where he attended
grade school and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1966. He served

Vietnam War. After being Honorably Discharged, he worked for Vernon
Brozowski Construction. Marlo was united in marriage to Karan J.
Hejtmanek on Aug. 22, 1970 at Fargo. They lived in Wahpeton where he
attended North Dakota State College of Science before they moved to St.
Paul, Minn. where he worked for the Minnesota Government. Marlo
purchased and operated the Ark Lounge in Oakes from 1976 to 1978. The
family then moved to Valley City, N.D. where Marlo attended Valley City
State University and received his Bachelor Degree in Education. In 1980
the family moved to Grand Forks, N.D. where Marlo obtained his Masters
Degree in Law at University of North Dakota. The family then lived in
Mooreton before Marlo started work as an airline dispatcher at Houston,
Texas and Lansing, Michigan. He later returned to Oakes where he worked
several years for Dakota Improvement and was elected mayor of Oakes from
2003 to 2007. Marlo was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Robert
Bergman American Legion Post No. 283, Mooreton, where he was past
District Commander and Eastern Region Vice Commander; Barney VFW
Memorial Post No. 9366, where he was lifetime member; and a life member
of the Disabled American Veterans.
Marlo is survived by: a daughter and two sons, Kimberly Tveter, West
Fargo; Timothy (Tracy) Tveter, children, Damien and Reece, Tomball,
Texas; Thomas (Tammy) Tveter, children, Nicollette and Presely, West
Fargo; two brothers: Russel (Tina) Tveter, Wilber, Neb.; and Kim
(Brenda) Tveter, Fargo.

Allan D. Mathison, 87, of Walhalla, ND died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at
the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla. A memorial service will be held
on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church,
Walhalla, ND. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Walhalla
Lutheran Piano Fund. Burial in the Hillside Cemetery, Walhalla, ND.
Allan D. Mathison was born March 11, 1922, at Walhalla, ND to John and
Minnie (Thompson) Mathison. He grew up in the Walhalla area where he
attended the Hilltop and Walhalla School. In 1942, he began his service
with the Fourth Division of the U.S. Marine Corps. During that time he
served in Saipan, Iwo Jima, the Tinian and Marshall Islands. Following
his discharge in 1945, Allan returned to Walhalla and worked 48 years
with the ND State Seed Department as a potato inspector, and also farmed
in the Leroy area. On December 2, 1945, he married Deloris McNamara at
Long Beach, CA. She survives as do his children, Audrey Beauchamp, West
Fargo, ND, Brian (Anita) Mathison and Corliss (Phil) Longtin, all of
Walhalla, grandchildren, Becky (Joel) Grasl, Katie (Mike) Dietz; Seth,
Michael, Bryce, and Morgan Mathison; Darrin (Lori), Andrea, and Jeramy
Longtin, great grandchildren, Kijia and Malia Dietz, and Jacob Grasl,
and sister-in-law, Alma Mathison, Walhalla, ND. He was an active member
of Walhalla Lutheran, and also a member of the Bartlette-Resler Post #
62, Walhalla American Legion, Pembina County Legion Association, V.F.W.,
Forty and Eight Veterans Society. Allan also served as Department
Commander of the American Legion from 1988 thru 1989. Preceding him in
death were his parents, son-in-law, Greg Beauchamp, brothers, Alfred,
James, and Lloyd, and sister, Thelma Harvey. Clergy: Rev. Don Swenson.

Former Grand Forks County Judge Frank J. Kosanda, 88,
died on May 20, 2009 in Sun City, AZ. Born Francis John
Kosanda on January 12, 1921 in St. Paul, MN to Mary (Sheehy)
and John G. Kosanda, he attended elementary and high
school in Hopkins, MN and later the University of
Minnesota in St. Paul. He married Pearl Wise and they
had one son, Kenneth. During WWII he joined the U.S.
Navy and served his country as a flight instructor
stationed at Pensacola, FL.
After the war, Frank owned and managed the Grand
Rapids, MN airport. He married R. Jeanette Christensen
on April 3, 1948. They had four children. He attended
the University of North Dakota and received L.L.B., B.S.
and Ph.B. degrees. Frank and Jeanette owned and managed
the Hector Field Airport Café in Fargo while Frank
attended law school in Grand Forks. He graduated from
the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1953
with a J.D. degree. He started his law career as an
Assistant Attorney General for the State of North Dakota
in Bismarck. In 1958 Frank returned to Grand Forks where
he entered private practice with the law firm of
Peterson, Peterson, and Kosanda. Later he opened his own
law firm with Jeanette serving as legal secretary.
Jeanette died on November 14, 1981 after a brief
illness.
In 1977 Frank was appointed Grand Forks County Judge
and served in that position until his retirement in
1990. He was active in a variety of law-related
committees including serving as President of the Grand
Forks County Bar Association, President of the North
Dakota Law School Alumni Association, State Chairman of
the Committee on Judicial Selection and of the Committee
on Interprofessional Cooperation and as a member of the
Joint Procedures Committee.
Frank was very involved in a number of community
service organizations, most notably the American Legion.
He served in every office of Grand Forks Post 6. He also
served as District 2 Commander and Department Commander
for North Dakota. He has served the Legion on the
national level, serving on the National Executive
Committee and in other capacities. Frank was also
involved with Boy Scouts, Civil Air Patrol, other
community service organizations and Holy Family Church,
being a charter member.
Frank married Anna Carlstrom Damitz on August 27,
1983. They made their home in Grand Forks and upon his
retirement became “snow birds” traveling between Grand
Forks and their home in Sun City, AZ. They also enjoyed
a home on Grace Lake, MN for many years. Always an avid
private airplane pilot, Frank took up hot air
ballooning. Frank and Ann spent many hours on this hobby
with Frank flying the balloon and Ann being the chase
drew on the ground. They flew in the annual Hot Air
Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, NM five times. After
retirement, Frank became quite involved with computers,
even teaching a computer class at the Sun City Senior
Center and becoming a member of the SunMacs computer
club.
Frank is survived by his wife, Ann, his five
children: Kenneth (Yvonne) Kosanda, Clermont, FL;
Michael (Janet) Kosanda, Grand Forks; Rosemary (Robert)
Newman, Molt, MT; Karen (Jerry) Braaten, Grand Forks;
and John (Mary) Kosanda, Maple Grove, MN, and two step
children, Bruce (Janet) Damitz, Coolidge, AZ, and Marie
(James) Bourguet, Los Alamos, NM. Frank is also survived
by twelve grandchildren, Annette Ibata, Katie Nega,
Nicholas Kosanda, Matthew Kosanda, Angela Kosanda,
Daniel Kosanda, James Braaten, Jason Braaten, Joel
Braaten, Shawna Angerhofer, Jeromy Damitz, and James
Bourguet, Jr. and fifteen great- grandchildren.
Memorial Mass: 11.00 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2009 in
Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.
Family Greeting: One hour prior to the liturgy in the
church on Friday.

Harry Will Moore, 82 of Fargo, ND died Friday, February 20, 2009 at
Rosewood on Broadway surrounded by family.
Harry was born February 22, 1926 in Valley City, ND to Dr. Max and Hilda
(Gotschall) Moore. He grew up in Valley City where he graduated high
school, before enlisting into the US Navy V-12 program in 1943, serving
in underwater demolition and as shipboard communication officer during
WWII. He returned to Valley City State Teachers college and graduated
with a degree in teaching. In 1951, he was recalled to active duty and
served in the special communication unit in the western Pacific during
the Korean Conflict. Returning home, he married Yvonne Larson February
27, 1954 in Ashland, Wisconsin.
Harry joined the staff of the Valley City Times Record as writer and
editor. Then moved to Fargo in 1963 to write and edit for the Fargo
Forum. In 1967 he became Department Membership Director for the ND
American Legion moving up to Assistant Department Adjutant until his
retirement in 1988. He maintained his Navy affiliation through the
Reserve programs and retired at the rank of commander in 1972 after 30+
years and was elected American Legion State Department Commander
1991-92.
Harry enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, the outdoors and
had a great love for music. He was an active member in many bands
throughout the area including the American Legion State Band, El Zagel
Shrine Circus Band, the Shrine Imperial Band and the Red River Valley
Veteran’s Band. He was proud to serve his country and was an active
member in many other Service organizations.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife,
Yvonne and four children, Kirby Moore, Fargo; Kathy (Rick) Hadland,
Kindred; Randy (Pat) Moore, Kindred; Maureen Moore, Fargo and four
grandchildren, Michael Moore, Nicole Moore, Fargo; Rachelle and Roderick
Hadland, Kindred.
Memorials can be sent to the American Legion Trust fund or memorials of
your choosing.
Memorial Service: Tuesday, February 24, 2009, 2:00 PM at First United
Methodist Church, Fargo.

Memorial services for Patty McIntosh Wold will be held at 1 :00 p.m.
Saturday, July 26, 2008 in the Northwood Community Bible Church with
Pastor John Woodward officiating. Coffee will be served at the church
after the service, followed by burial in Mayville Cemetery, Mayville, ND
with her late husband, Truman C. Wold.
Mrs. Wold, 96, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at her residence
at Canterbury House, Alexandria, Louisiana, attended by her son, Dr.
Howard G. Wold.
She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Alexandria, and a member
of the Gideon’s Auxiliary, the Child Evangelism Crusade, the American
Legion Auxiliary and the Christian Women's Club. She was a servant at
heart, attentive to the needs of her family and her husband and of many
others.
During their many years' residence in Northwood, Mrs. Wold was active in
community and church affairs and worked side by side with her husband in
his political activities and as an advertising representative for the
Northwood Gleaner and for their printing and publishing company.
Prior to moving to Northwood, the Wolds lived in Fargo, Watford City,
Cando and Bowbells. Patty and Truman treasured their many North Dakota
friends, and were grateful for every opportunity to see and hear from
them.
Mrs. Wold was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Truman
Christian Wold and by her parents, Glen O. and Dorothy B. Hubbard
McIntosh.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Pedar C. Wold and
wife Lana of Hilo, Hawaii, and Dr. Howard G. Wold and wife Jane of
Alexandria, Louisiana; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren,
and niece Pamela J. Kostelecky and family of Dickinson, North Dakota.

Leonard Hoff, 76, of Richardton, ND,
affectionately known as Rocky, died Monday, January 14, 2008 in the
St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial
will be held on Friday, January 18, 2008 at 10:00 AM Mountain Time
at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Richardton with Father Boniface
Muggli, OSB as Celebrant. Visitation will begin at St. Mary’s after
4:00 pm Thursday with Vigil services and Rosary at 8:00 PM Mountain
Time. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery near
Mandan, ND. Military rites will be by the Theodore Zech Post #180 of
the American Legion.
Rocky was born March 9, 1931, on the family farm south of
Richardton, the son of John J. and Florence (Fleck) Hoff. He was
raised and educated rural Richardton. Rocky married Leona Kuhn, May
7, 1949 at St. Mary’s. Rocky entered the United States National
Guard February 27, 1950; he was then transferred the US Army on
January 16, 1951 and served in Korea. He was discharged back to the
National Guard Oct. 23, 1952 and discharged from the National Guard
on February 26, 1953. Rocky returned to his farm where he farmed and
in 1961 added a Grade A dairy to the operation. When the children
were grown, Rocky retired from the dairy and drove truck for the
London Pantry, and drove school bus. After taking refrigeration
classes, Rocky started Southway Refrigeration, which kept him on the
move to all the communities around Richardton. Being true
entrepreneurs, Rocky and Leona started the Southway Hunting Lodge in
2001, business that catered to pheasant hunters from out of the
area.
Rocky was involved in many ways in the community. He was an
active member of the American Legion Post #180, the American Legion
was his second family, a past school board president, he was
instrumental in starting the Senior Citizens Center, a member of the
40 et 8 of the American Legion and was a past State Commander of the
American Legion.
Grateful for having shared in his
life are his wife of 56 years, Leona, Richardton, his sons and
daughters-in-law: Kenneth and Emily, Sidney, MT; Dennis and Twyla,
Hazen, ND; Randall and Donna, Grand Forks, ND; and daughters and
sons-in-law: Robert and Troy Shegrud, Makoti, ND; and Laurie and
Dale Thompson, Bismarck, ND. His eight grandchildren: Nick Hoff,
Neuly Hoff, Baily Hoff, Farrah Bleth, Brayden Thompson, Parker
Thompson, Malisa Olsen, and Tyson Hoff and five great grandchildren
. Rocky is also survived by his one brother: John (Irene) Hoff,
Dickinson, ND; and five sisters: Clara (Frank) Melchior, Gladys
Melchior, and Mary (Joe) Hammerschmidt, all of Richardton, and Rose
Steiner, Carmichael, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents,
one brother Jake, two sisters Agnes Dallas, and Lorrine Hoff, and
one granddaughter Lacey Hoff.

Howard V. Erickson, 86, passed from this world to meet his Lord and to
rejoin his beloved wife, Annabelle on January 23, 2007 at his home,
after a valiant battle with many health problems.
He was born in Daniels County, Montana July 10, 1920. He graduated from
Sacred Heart Academy, Fargo, ND in 1939. He married Annabelle Nanson
April 5, 1941. Howard served in the Army during World War II and Korea.
After arriving home, he continued his military service in the ND Army
National Guard. He went to work for General Motors Parts Division and
became a District Manager prior to his retirement.
Howard has been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks, El Zagal
Shrine, Cormorant Lions (past president) and American Legion. He was
very active in the American Legion, rising through the ranks to become
ND Department Commander and National Executive Committeeman. The VA
Hospital benefited from his 30 years of volunteering with them.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and A. Gertrude
(Conlon) Erickson; his wife, Annabelle; his brothers, William Erickson
and Robert Erickson; and his sisters, Lois Fisher and Margaret Erickson.
He is survived by his two daughters, Rita Erickson, Fargo, and Peggy
Bender (Clarence), Bottineau, ND; five grandchildren; six great
grandchildren; four step grandchildren; brother, James Erickson
(Camille); and his sister, Alice Novarra (Frank).
Visitation: Friday, January 26, 2007 from 5-7 p.m at Boulger Funeral

79, Mandan, died Jan. 28, 2005, at a Fargo hospital due to injuries
sustained in an automobile accident. Mass of Christian Burial will be
held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan,
with the Rev. Charles Heidt officiating. A full military committal will
be held at 3 p.m. by the American Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 707 and
the American Legion Post 40 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel
Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Catholic Daughters rosary at 4 p.m., a KC
rosary at 7 p.m., followed by a parish vigil at 7:30 p.m. Visitation
will continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.
James was born Oct. 12, 1925, in Bismarck, the son of Ernest R. and
Viola Mae (Heath) Coats. He was raised and educated in Bismarck and
graduated from West Division High in Milwaukee.
After high
school he entered the U.S. Navy, serving time during World War II. He
returned and continued his education at Bismarck Junior College,
graduating, then enrolling at NDSU. He returned to the U.S. Navy,
serving additional military service during the Korean Conflict. He then
returned from the military to continue his education at NDSU, where he
earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education.
He began his teaching career at Turtle Lake High School, Herman, Minn.,
Steele and New Salem, before moving to Mandan and teaching mathematics
and science at the Mandan High School, spanning from 1957 until his
retirement in 1989. Jim was a dedicated teacher and would take the time
for students who needed help. When you took one of Jim's classes it was
assumed you needed to do your homework and be prepared to go to the
chalkboard and work out math problems. During his tenure there, he
served as president of the Mandan Education Association and for many
years he was a member of the district's negotiating team. He was also a
member of the NDEA and NEA, where he was very active and worked at
various national assemblies.
Jim married the love of his life, Alice Faye Selby, Nov. 20, 1965, at
Mandan.
Having served time in the military, central to his life was the American
Legion, where he was elected commander of the American Legion's Seventh
District in 1982, and was state director for the Legion's education and
scholarship program. James was elected commander of Mandan's Gilbert S.
Furness Post No. 40 in 1985. In 1989, he was chosen as Department of
North Dakota American Legion commander. He was a member of the 40 et 8.
As a Democrat, James was elected to represent District 34 in 1990. He
served in the House of Representatives for eight years. He was perhaps
best known for his work to increase teacher pay and make health care
more affordable.
James was the 1974-75 president of the Mandan United Fund, president of
the Mandan Golden Age Club for 11 years, director of the Morton County
Red Cross and a volunteer for the Mandan Golden Age Services.
He won the Golden Rule Award, the state voluntary action award, the NDEA
Leadership award, the Four-Chaplains Citation and the Legionnaire of the
Year Award.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Faye, Mandan; two brothers and
sisters-in-law, Will (Fay), Othello, Wash., and Bob (Kathy), Pelican
Rapids, Minn.; six sisters and four brothers-in-law, Eva (Bill) Clement,
Wichita, Kan., Ruby Hocking, Bothell, Wash., Evelyn (Gerry) Bethke,
Thiensville, Wis., Rose Ann (Vince) Feist, Bismarck, Norma Flore, Fargo,
and Mary (Virgil) Schatz, Mesa, Ariz.; one sister-in-law, Diane (Hal)
Lang, Billings, Mont.; three brothers-in-law, Jim (JeAnne) Selby,
Bismarck, and Jerry (Linda) Selby and Tom (Nancy) Selby, all of
Williston; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers-in-law, Bill
Hocking and Jack Flore.

Albert William Olenberger

Albert William Olenberger, 86, of Rapid City, died Friday, November 26,
at Rapid City Regional Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in
Harvey, North Dakota to Rosina and William Olenberger November 19. 1918.
After high school graduation he joined the CCC and worked construction
throughout the western United States. Albert joined the North Dakota
National Guard in December 1940 and served with the 164th Infantry
division. On October 21, 1941 Albert married Frances Paulson. The couple
moved to Camp Claibourne, LA, where they resided until Pearl Harbor Day.
Saying goodbye to his bride of six weeks, Albert spent the next two
years serving in the South Pacific. He returned to the US on a medical
ship after contracting malaria. He was discharged from the military in
December, 1944. For his service to his country Al was awarded many
service medals including the Bronze Star. After his discharge Fran and
Al spent a few years in Harvey until his job with Ottertail Power
Company took them to McVille, ND. After retiring from OTP in 1981 the
couple moved to Mesa, AZ where they enjoyed many years with their
friends. They have resided in Rapid City since 1991. He was active in
softball in ND. He was inducted into the ND Softball Hall of Fame in
1962. As a veteran he was involved with the VFW and the American Legion.
He served as the ND State American Legion Commander in 1968 and served
in several positions at the National level. He enjoyed sharing his
patriotism with school aged children and handing out flags at local
parades. In his early years he loved hunting with his sons and camping
and fishing with Fran. In the recent years he enjoyed golfing, watching
the Vikings and Friday night boxing. He loved visiting and no matter how
many people he met, he never forgot a name. Even though Al and Fran
moved around, his heart always belonged to North Dakota. Albert was a
loving husband and father who cared for his family always putting their
wellbeing ahead of his own. Integrity, courage and determination were
the values that guided him every day of his life. More than anything he
enjoyed having his family around him. He was especially proud of his
granddaughters and delighted in hearing stories of his first great
granddaughter. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Frances, Rapid
City; sons, Douglas, Seattle, WA; Scott and his wife, Ailsa. Devils
Lake, ND; daughter, Janell Jewett and her husband, George, Rapid City;
granddaughters Christine & Jay Peterson: Jenny & Cam Jewett Lund; Emily
Jewett; and great granddaughter, Lily Peterson. A memorial service will
be held at Calvary Lutheran Church, Friday, December 3, 2004 at 1:00PM
with Rev. Dwight Stensgaard officiating. In lieu of flowers the family
